O3b Networks raises a total of 1.2 billion for its Internet via Satellite project

29/11/2010
O3b Networks, the next-generation and low-cost Satellite Internet access project, announced today a total of 1.2 billion dollars raised from its partners, among which are Google, SES (ASTRA2Connect) to name the most famous in the world of the Internet and Satellite communications.

SES, which we are familiar in Europe to provide ASTRA2Connect, will increase its stake to 155 million of Euros by investing 75 million over the next 3 years.

However all is not rosy: in fact, the O3b project that we are following since 2008, the date of its creation, should already be operational since this year. The financial crisis has gone through there and it is held responsible for this situation. It will now wait until 2013 before we see something out of this project. A timeframe that we still seem very optimistic since O3B Networks will have put no less than 8 satellites in orbit to rival with fiber optics and cover 150 countries, according to Greg Wyler, founder of O3B Networks.

Thales Alenia Space is currently building the first eight satellites for O3b. These first 8 satellites will be launched by Arianespace in 2013 by a Soyuz rocket from Kourou in French Guiana. ViaSat will provide the teleport and modems.
